The Explorers Dive Club is a nonprofit group promoting dive community, sharing knowledge and experience. We are a group of central NJ recreational divers representing all ages, certifications, diving interests and levels of experience. We organize shore dives, boat dives, picnics, dive vacations and other social events. Our monthly meetings feature prominent speakers in sport diving and we publish a monthly newsletter. Need a dive buddy? Join the club! Thank you for visiting and come back often to see what's new.

Club meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 7:30 pm at the Spain Inn in Piscataway from April through October. Join us for dinner before the meeting. There are no meetings November through March, but we hold a December holiday party, a Sunday brunch in October, an annual summer picnic and a Delaware River rafting trip in August.

June 2019 Club Meeting

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, June 11, 2019, at 7:30 pm in the Spain Inn Restaurant in Piscataway. Our guest speaker will be Phil Abbott who will show us his video "Diving with the Whale Sharks of Djibouti." In December 2018, Phil Abbott and Explorer Dive Club members Al Simone and John Yavorsky joined the Shark Research Expedition to identify whale sharks in the Gulf of Tadjoura in Djibouti (Africa). Situated below the Red Sea and bordering Somalia with its infamous pirates, Djibouti may not seem like an ideal Dive Vacation but it turned out to be a relatively safe and exciting adventure. The Gulf and the adjoining Lake Ghoubet have many whale sharks in the 6 to 25' size range that were documented by photo ID by the group and expedition leader Dr. Jennifer Schmidt. The group stayed on the liveaboard dive boat, M/V Deli, a Turkish gulet, and was Able to SCUBA dive the tropical reefs between whale shark ID snorkels. A large light off the stern provided night encounters with larger whale sharks. One site, La Faille (“The Crack”) in Lake Ghoubet was the convergence of tectonic plates that we were able to dive.
